Winnipeg has one. So does Vancouver and many other cities across the country. Sudbury’s Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts was inspired by these type of successful events. Now in its third year, it is a fun evening that celebrates people who make their living working in the arts.
The 2016 reception gala will take place at the Sudbury Theatre Centre on Wednesday, May 18 starting at 7 pm.
In addition to honouring artists, the volunteer organizing committee working under the auspices of the Sudbury Arts Council and The Regroupement des organismes culturels de Sudbury (ROC), are adding some new elements to this reception gala.
To celebrate emerging artists, the committee is working with the Sudbury Art Gallery. Featured artwork from the gallery’s Emergence annual juried high school art exhibition will be hung on the STC’s gallery wall during the theatre’s last production of the season and for the gala.
Three artists will be awarded bursaries to help them pursue their art. The city does not provide grants to individual artists.
Finalists will be announced Monday, April 18
Tickets for the Mayor’s Celebration are $50 and are available at the STC box office. All proceeds from this event are invested in artists’ bursaries.
