New donations for Place des Arts

New donors have answered the call for community donations to the Place des Arts building project with donations totalling $250,000.

These new donations were announced on June 21 at the Mérite Horace Viau gala evening, an annual event organized by the Richelieu clubs of Greater Sudbury to honour the achievements of community leaders.

At this event, the Place des Arts received a joint donation from all five of Greater Sudbury’s Richelieu clubs, namely Club Richelieu Sudbury,Club Richelieu de la ValléeClub Richelieu Les Patriotes de Sudbury,Club Richelieu Rivière-des-Français and Club Richelieu féminin de Sudbury.

The Richelieu clubs have upheld their commitment towards Greater Sudbury’s Francophone youth for decades. Their donation recognizes the value of the work done by the founding member organizations of the Place des Arts with young people and their families, through their workshops in schools, summer camps, personal development opportunities and contributions to community and cultural vitality.

Place des Arts also received strong support from business people with deep roots in the Rayside-Balfour area, Greater Sudbury.

Daniel Poulin and Louise Mullally are part of the family of entrepreneurs who have been operating the agri-food business Don Poulin Potatoes in Azilda for five generations. Their support to the Place des Arts reflects the joy of music which has always been a part of their family gatherings and their donation aims to ensure that Greater Sudbury will soon have an outstanding venue in which to celebrate family and community spirit.

Laura Bélanger of Chelmsford is a businesswoman who recognizes the importance of high community aspirations and the key role that the private sector can play in such projects. In her view, the Place des Arts is a proud showcase for our country’s Francophone culture and a legacy for future generations. For Ms. Bélanger, the Place des Arts shows that our city can dream big and she is proud to help make the dream a reality.

The co-chairs of the Place des Arts’ capital fundraising campaign, Mr. Daniel Gingras and Mr. Stéphan Plante, extend heartfelt thanks to the donors and underscore the significance of their support. “It displays their admirable sense of commitment to the community, as well as their recognition of what this new arts centre means for the future of our region. Place des Arts will unleash new energies and enrich the lives of thousands of citizens and these generous donors want Greater Sudbury to reap these benefits. On behalf of the entire Cabinet, we are thanking them for their remarkable gesture of support.”

With these new donations, the major contributions announced in the Share Our Sense of Place campaign now total more than $1,175,000. Other pending donations will be confirmed in the coming months.
