Health Sciences North (HSN) officially opened the KICX for Kids Club House, a new treatment room at HSN on the NEO Kids Pediatric Unit in partnership with NEO Kids Foundation and the KICX for Kids Campaign by KICX 91.7.
In 2014, the KICX for Kids Campaign set to raise funds to renovate and expand the existing Pediatric treatment room. In three years, with the communities’ support, the campaign reached its goal and raised over $250,000 for NEO Kids Foundation and the new treatment room in 2017.
“We are grateful for the contribution from KICX and the community for supporting the KICX for Kids campaign. The renovations to this treatment room are helping the NEO Kids and Family Program become a patient centric and family driven centre. The distractions will help keep patients focused and calm during medical procedures,” says Dr. Sean Murray, Medical Director for the NEO Kids and Family Program.
The KICX for Kids Club House is a treatment room also referred to as a distraction room, where a number of invasive procedures will be performed on children who have been admitted to hospital. These procedures include lumbar (spinal) punctures, the insertion of catheters and intravenous (IV) lines, and the insertion of feeding tubes.
“Invasive procedures are not done in the patient’s individual room. The clinical team wants the patient rooms to be “procedure free” so they can remain a calm, “safe” environment for children”, says Carolyn Marshall, Nurse Clinician, NEO Kids NICU and Pediatrics. This new space will be able to comfortably accommodate patients, their family members, and treatment staff with medical supplies and equipment that will no longer be in plain view.”
The renovations include a family seating area, child-friendly furniture, a mural, two television screens, twinkle lights and the use of creative décor to make medical equipment and supplies less intimidating for children.
“Today is a proud day for KICX listeners and NEO Kids. For NEO Kids this treatment room and the area around it is a key step to creating a child-friendly environment to care for our children closer to home,” says Mick Weaver, General Sales Manager, KICX 91.7FM. “For KICX listeners and the team at KICX, it is the materialization of a vision, of three years of hard work, focus and commitment to a common goal. As a donor, I don’t believe there is anywhere else you can sit with the team that delivers the care, get what the needs are straight from the front line staff and what their vision is and help that vision become a reality. Today, we celebrate delivering the vision that Dr. Sean Murray and his team laid out for us three years ago.”
The KICX for Kids campaign has raised funds for the NEO Kids and Family Program since 2011, funding new equipment for the program. The funds were raised from benefit concerts, the annual radiothon, poker runs and others community events.
Background Info
Phase 1 of the KICX for Kids campaign was launched in October of 2011 with a goal of
raising $250,000 over five years for pediatric care at Health Sciences North (HSN). The KICX for Kids campaign has succeeded beyond expectations. The full $250,000 was raised in less than three years. These funds were used to purchase the 3 new ventilators.
KICX 91.7 FM launched Phase 2 of KICX for Kids campaign in 2014, to raise an additional $250,000, in partnership with HSN and NEO Kids Foundation. The goal was to raise funds to completely renovate and expand the existing treatment room at Health Sciences North into the most child-friendly treatment room at HSN.
In 2017, KICX for Kids had reached their final goal and construction on the new space began in summer 2018.
The renovations include a family seating area, child-friendly furniture, a mural, two television screens, twinkle lights and the use of creative décor to make medical equipment and supplies less intimidating for children.
