Sudbury’s popular IODE Tour of Homes will be held Sunday, Nov 4, a week earlier than previous years.
“Its usual date would have fallen on Remembrance Day. So out of respect for our veterans, we approached the Royal Canadian Legion (Lockerby) members and they suggested we move the date forward a week,” explains tour co-convenor Mary Guy.
“One of IODE’s missions is to support citizenship programs; we have been longtime supporters of the poppy fund and have committed more funds this year to support veterans,” adds Heather Hare, the tour’s other co-convenor.
“At this year’s tour, veterans will be working alongside IODE members and other volunteers to bring attention to their cause and to shine a light on our relationship.”
The tour features three unique homes of interest (such as Liz Peestock’s home pictured at right)) offering an eclectic mix of historical and architectural features, and three homes beautifully decorated for Christmas with the help of professionals Terry Vendetti, Suzanne C. Fournier and Pat Charles.
Tour partcipants are invited to stop at the Parkside Older Adult Centre on Durham St. for the Holly & Ivy Tea, where they will enjoy a complimentary beverage, a sweet treat and a chance to win door prizes.
Those interested in knowing more about how tour proceeds are used can check out displays highlighting some of the IODE’s work in the Sudbury community, such as care packages for people in need at Genevra house, health-care facilities, Foyer Notre Dame, Elgin Street Mission, and the Children’s Aid Society.
In addition to these projects, proceeds will fund the chapter’s education and citizenship programs, including bursaries for local students and the Alzheimer Society’s Adult Day program, along with support for the Legion’s poppy fund.
“We are really focused on serving the Sudbury community and we do our best to fill the gaps in the social network system,” notes Guy.
Ticket holders are encouraged to donate a warm pair of socks for the Elgin Street Mission, which can be left at any of the homes or at the tea on the day of the tour.
Tour passports will go on sale for $25 at the beginning of October at a number of local businesses including all three Barrydowne Paint locations. Check out the IODE City of Lakes Facebook page for updates and a chance to win two free passports.
